Allow myself to introduce… myself.
Hi, I’m Brian Cendrowski. I’m a beer blogger and homebrewer. It’s nice to meet you and thanks for reading. I am beyond excited to be a contributor on RateBeer’s HopPress. My regular posts will be featured on Thursdays.
I am no Charlie Papazian or Michael Jackson. I became a craft beer appreciator circa 2003 and have been a homebrewer since early 2007.
According to the rule of “10,000 Hours To Become an Expert,” I still have about 4 years of heavy beer drinking left to go before I can be considered an expert on beer. However, what gaps I have in my knowledge I try to make up for with passion. And my beard.
I began my beer blogging odyssey in May 2007 when I started my personal beer blog, Untamed Beer. As I discovered so many wonderful beers and learned about different styles, I felt I needed an outlet to share my experiences.
I want to share what I come across and learn, in hopes that it will encourage others to experiment and discover new favorites. My philosophy is to keep it real, untamed, if you will. Beer should be fun and relaxing, not intimidating or condescending.
My own beer journey has humble roots. I didn’t like beer at all until I was around 24 years old. It’s no surprise, since up until that time I had only known Bud Light, Miller Lite and High Life. Before that time, I drank Woodchuck hard cider and my liquor of choice was amaretto sour. (Yes, yes, get your laughs out now.)
Things began to turn for me when I was introduced to Newcastle and Sierra Nevada. I realized there were other styles of beer other than what I saw on TV. My transformation away from the dark side was complete when the Flying Saucer opened in Columbia, SC in 2003.
At that time, I lived downtown, about three stumbling blocks away from the Saucer. I joined the UFO Club and began my quest to drink 200 different beers. Talk about an eye opening experience. Sure, there were some misses among those 200 (most notably a gueuze, which I was by no means ready for at the time. It was like giving asparagus to a 3 year-old), but that was when I realized how expansive the world of beer was and how much work I had to do.
Since then I’ve always tried to get my hands on anything new to expand my beer horizons. I’ve also met some really cool people along the way and have done a lot of things I’ve never thought I would have the chance to do.
That includes being a blogger on RateBeer. I am so excited to have this opportunity, and I thank you again for reading my tiny little slice of the beer world. I hope that I can share some new things with you and cause you to crack a smile along the way.
